Our Comittment to TRC Calls to Action
We are in the process of revising and renewing the division’s responses to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. While still in the early stages of renewal, we plan on revising our process and have formed a new division standing committee to guide and monitor our work towards reconciliation and healing. This group will help inform and formulate our plans. We have noted four areas of work including:
- efforts to decolonize education;
- work to address racism and strengthen anti-racist/anti-oppressive education in the division;
- particular efforts to support reconciliation and healing; and
- the provision of responsive and appropriate survivor supports.
We work closely with First Nations and Métis organizations to offer treaty education and teaching from an Indigenous perspective in modern classroom settings.
Our goal is to improve student retention and learning outcomes in collaboration with families and community.
Working with our partners and elders, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools has developed a framework to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.
As we seek reconciliation, we are guided by four teachings (translations in parentheses are Cree and Michif respectively):
Self: (nakatêyimisowin/mitātisōwin)
Are we willing to reconcile with ourselves? If we deny our own truths, it will impede our ability to reconcile with others. We must recognize and forgive ourselves for our shortcomings.
Neighbour: (niwîtaskêmakan/wītapimāķan)
Are we in right relation with our relatives? They are our circle of influence, the past and the future.
Earth/Land: (okâwîmaw askîy/askî)
Have we reconciled ourselves with mother earth? Are we taking more than we have been given, and are we giving back?
Creator: (mâmawiyôtawîmaw/Jîzos)
Once we have reconciled with these questions, we will better see the truth, and ultimately reconcile with the Creator. We will See truth, Walk truth, and Pray truth.
